Narrowing it to one section of wall

Do this before calling anyone. A precise location keeps any repair small.

  1. Close the room overnight.Shut doors and turn off fans so the air settles. First thing in the morning, walk the walls slowly and note where the smell is sharpest.
  2. Check the openings.Remove outlet and switch cover plates on the suspect wall and sniff at each box. A strong whiff from one box usually means the source is within a stud bay or two.
  3. Look for flies and stains.Small flies at a nearby window, or a faint brown or damp spot low on the drywall, often mark the bay. Fluids run down, so stains show below the carcass.
  4. Think about the route in.Mice travel along plumbing and wiring runs. Walls with a sink, dishwasher, or exterior hose bib are frequent hiding places.
  5. Mark the spot.Put a small piece of painter's tape where the smell is strongest. If you hire help later, that tape saves time and keeps the access cut small.

Questions to ask before a wall is opened

If you decide to bring someone in, these answers tell you how careful the work will be.

  1. How will you confirm the location before cutting, and what will you do if the first opening misses?
  2. Can the source be reached from an outlet box, the attic, the basement ceiling or a crawl space instead?
  3. How big will the opening be, and who patches and paints it?
  4. What will be used on the stud bay after removal: an enzyme product, a sealer, or fragrance?
  5. Will anyone check for other dead rodents or active entry points while the wall is open?

Common questions

Can a dead mouse smell for months?

The strong phase usually passes in a few weeks. A smell that lasts longer often means more than one animal, a larger animal, or residue soaked into insulation that needs treatment.

Should I spray air freshener into the outlet?

No. Spraying aerosols into an electrical box is a fire and shock risk, and fragrance only masks the odor for a short time.
