Why keep a journal
Noses adapt quickly, and memory of a smell is unreliable. A household that lived with a strong odor for a week may not notice a faint one that remains, or may worry that a normal fading smell is getting worse. Writing down a simple rating each day, in the same place at the same time, turns impressions into a trend.
It also helps if the smell comes back. A provider can do far more with a note that says the odor returned on the third hot afternoon, strongest at the north wall of the bedroom, than with a call saying it still smells.

Reading the trend
- IfRatings drop steadily over one to two weeksThenThe residue is fading as expected. Keep ventilating.
- IfRatings stay level after the first few daysThenSome residue remains; ask the provider whether the material under the carcass was treated.
- IfRatings rise on hot days onlyThenResidue in framing or insulation is warming up; sealing or replacing material may be needed.
- IfA new spot starts to smell or flies appearThenThere may be a second carcass. Call the provider back with your notes.
What to do with the journal
If the smell fades as expected, keep the journal with the removal photos and invoice. It shows when the problem was solved, which is useful in a rental, a sale or if a similar smell appears later. If the smell lingers or returns, send the relevant entries to the provider; most will come back to check their work when shown specific, dated notes.
A journal that shows a steady drop also helps the household stop worrying. Seeing the numbers fall is reassuring in a way that memory is not.
Common questions
How long should I keep the journal?
Two to three weeks after removal is usually enough to see whether the smell has gone. Keep it longer if it seemed to return.
What rating counts as done?
When the rating stays at 0 or 1 in the same spot for several days in a row, including warm afternoons, the problem is usually solved.
